What is KYC (identity verification)?

Also called: Know your customer, Identity verification

KYC, short for know your customer, is the identity check a payment or booking platform runs on a business before it can accept payments and receive payouts.

Platforms that move money are required to know who they pay. KYC confirms the person or company is real and that payouts go to an account in their name. It protects customers from fake listings and owners from payout fraud.

It usually asks for a legal name, a government ID number, a phone number and an address, and for companies, registration details.
