What is a booking commission?

Also called: Commission fee, Platform fee

A booking commission is a percentage of each booking that a platform keeps, as opposed to a flat subscription fee that stays the same however much you book.

Marketplaces usually charge commission because they bring the customer. Software that runs your own bookings usually charges a flat monthly fee, because the customer is already yours.

The difference grows with success. A commission takes more as your bookings grow; a flat fee does not. Payment processing fees are separate in both cases: they go to the payment provider, not the platform.

ExampleA space earning ₦1,500,000 a month pays ₦150,000 at a 10% commission. On a flat plan it pays the same monthly fee whether it earns ₦500,000 or ₦3,000,000.
